Me, I, myself

*fingers crossed*

I haven't advertised this, but I've been unemployed since the beginning of June. Today, I've finally gotten a callback for an interview. Hopefully this will lead to something and quickly.

I-Con 31

So another I-Con has come and gone. How was it? Glad you asked! (what? you didn't ask? I thought I heard you...)

Thanks to I-Con having early pick up of badges the week prior, I was able to skip the horror that is the pre-reg line.
Panels attended
Stepping through the Stargate - A panel on Stargate and its various incarnations, run by Docking Bay 516 (local Star Wars fan group turned general Sci Fi fan group)
Gaming Guest Meet and Greet - Got to meet Cam Banks, George Strayton, Julie Ann Dawson, Mat Hawkins, Meguey Baker, Mike Tresca, and Timothy Hutchings. An overview of gaming, what they're all doing, and their thoughts in general.

I took a break for dinner, then went back to attend:

Sex in Comics - Glenn Hauman and Mark Mazz led a discussion about how sex has been portrayed in comics, starting with the recent trend in Archie comics before discussing comics such as Empowered, Ultimates, The Walking Dead, Authority, Y, the Last Man, Buffy, Brat Pack, Catwoman, Red Hood and the Outlaws, and American Flag.
I wrapped up the night with  H.P. Lovecraft in Gaming - Mike Tresca and two other panelists (I came in late and missed their intros) discussed H.P. Lovecraft, Call of Cthulhu, and its ilk.

Panels attended
Celebrity RPG - Cam Banks ran an introduction to Marvel Heroic Roleplaying Game with the help of Aaron Rosenberg, George Strayton, Mike Tresca, Meguey Baker, Julia Ellingboe, and a lucky member of the audience. Playing various heros of the Marvel Universe, a fun time was had by all. I picked up the game from Mr. Banks.

Lunch and a trip to the Dealer's Room followed, where I picked up some requested dice. Though I went back a few more times, this was the only purchase I made in the Dealer's Room, so it'll be the only mention.

Girl Gamers - Meguey Baker, Julia Ellingboe, Julia Ann Dawson, and Jenifer Rosenberg led the panel. The usual fare for such a panel, mainly focused on the shift in RPGs and what it's like dealing with idiot men who can't handle women in gaming. I picked up a copy of Psi Run (by Meguey Baker) which appears to be a fun game where you have psychic powers and amnesia (and what could possibly go wrong with that combination?).
Most Dangerous Anime - Ok. I don't even know what I saw there. It hurt my brain.
Ecchi! Can They Really Do That in Anime? - Anime that pushed the boundaries, with lots of panty shots, implied and total nudity, explicit description of sex acts, and a breast car.
Anime Game Show Super Show: Card Sharks and Press Your Luck - Anime question themed game shows.
Most Dangerous Anime: 18+ Edition - Excerpts from Blood-C and MD Geist

Panels attended
Firefly Discussion - Docking Bay 516 led a discussion about Firefly and Serenity
Writing in Someone Else's Universe - Charles Gannon, John Peel, Keith DeCandido, and Neal Levin answered questions about, and shared stories regarding media they've written in universes that they did not create.
I-Con 2013: Major Changes Coming! - This panel was actually cancelled, but an impromptu unofficial discussion happened outside the room. The short form is that next year, I-Con will be held at Hofstra University rather than SUNY Stony Brook due to construction.
Harry Potter Discussion - Docking Bay 516 led a discussion on Harry Potter, the relationships therein, the issue of mortality, and the nature of Voldemort and Harry Potter.
The History of RPGs and What You Can Do to Help - Timothy Hutchings and Maguey Baker led a panel talking about the historical significance of RPGs and Mr. Hutchings push to collect RPG items for PlaGMaDA (The Play Generated Map and Document Archive) to preserve and make available for future study various documents from the creation and playing of various games. Also what people can do to contribute to PlaGMaDA.
Lord of the Rings Discussion - Docking Bay 516 led a discussion about the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (both the books and movies) as well as the upcoming movies based on The Hobbit.

And that, as they say, was that.

I-Con wasn't the same without thegamemistress, lostsatyr, and jesshartley. You were all missed, greatly.

So, for the first time since 2005, I attended I-Con without friends. I missed swapping panel stories and other assorted experiences, so you all get to hear mine. Deal with it!

Managed to get to the campus at 4p. The pre-reg line was thankfully short at that point, so when things opened at 4:30p, the wait wasn't that long. Unfortunately, the Dealer's Room didn't open that quickly, so I had to wait till later to visit. grabbed some dinner though. Mmm... Shrimp Scampi pizza...
Who's Wand is it Anyways? - Seventh Years Edition - Dumbledore's Army
Not bad for improved humor. We were told that we could head into the R/NC-17 area, but the players were very hesitant. The most risque we got was during "Scenes from a (Witch's) Hat." Thank you audience for your dirty minds. :)
Dealer's Room
Got some shopping done for thegamemistress and lostsatyr.  I had fun chatting with the dealer for Red Tie Products and Off World Designs, as well as Keith DeCandido and Russ Colchamiro. Picked up a new Serenity shirt, a copy of Colchamiro's Finders Keepers (as well as a duck), and the Farscape: Strange Detractors comic by DeCandido, signed by both.
White Wolf Q&A - E. Webb & M. Webb
Heard a bit about the Vampire the Masquerade: Twentieth Anniversary Edition and changes going on at White Wolf, including E. Webb's recent promotion.
Harry Potter and the Magic of Hentai - Dumbledore's Army
An 18+ panel. Dedicated to adult imagery and slash prose related to Harry Potter. Including a Giant Squid/Hogwarts slash story. Yeah, was just that disturbing.
Rocky Horror Picture Show Shadowcast - The Unconventional Conventionalists
I was very impressed. One of the best floor shows I've seen. Very professional. I'm going to have to go to their other shows this summer.

What Makes a Great Villain - K. DeCandido, Denise Crosby, C. Berman, A. Rosenberg, T. Brevoort, and other panelists who I can't recognize
Very interesting, Some good points made. Not much else to say. :p
Behind the Shadows of Shadowcasting - The Unconventional Conventionalists
A panel on shadow casts for RHPS and how the UCC do their thing.
Lunch/Dealer's Room
Lots of strolling. No buying though.
The (Porno)Graphic Novel - J. Crawford, L. Rozakis, M. Brown, and a panelist not named
Basically the history of the graphic novel and a talk about adult themes that have appeared in some. Lost Girls and Watchmen were discussed. Also a talk about the difference between pornographic novels (for men) and erotic novels (for women).
Celebrity D&D - A. Rosenberg, C. Banks, F. Mentzer, G. Strayton, plus two other celebrities and a guest player from the audience (what? I wasn't taking notes...)
Not bad for a first session. Old School D&D. An interesting quest. Lots of humor. I hope this becomes an annual event. Got some good swag, including another duck. (Yay duck!)
Writing in a Setting that Fans Know Better than You - K. DeCandido
DeCandido has some great stories to tell. Especially when it's obvious that an author has never been to a city they're writing in.
Most Dangerous Anime: Too Dangerous for the Underage
Clips from various anime with hyperviolent leads with a mix of corny-awful blended in. The only title I remember is MD Geist.

Dealer's Room
Picked up some games. 'Nuff said.
A History of the Rocky Horror Picture Show - The Unconventional Conventionalists
What's on the box.
D&D Edition Wars - E. Webb
A White Wolf employee running a panel on D&D. Yeah. It was good. Mostly a talk about how people need to get a grip on dealing with the differences between editions and that other people won't like the edition they like.

A few panels I wanted to attend in the afternoon were canceled. With nothing really exciting me at this point, I headed back to the Dealer's Room for one last walkthrough before closing my I-Con 30 experience.

Me, I, myself

An update I wish i did not need to make

After consultations with doctors, we've decided that we've done all that we can for Dad. The type of cancer he has is insidious and persistent. Surgery, chemo, and radiation have not killed it and has nearly killed him twice now. They will not improve his quality of life. So we have decided to make the most of the time he has left.

I thank everyone who has given their well wishes and support.

How much would you spend to help save a life?

I am asking your support for a worthy cause. In honor the memory of Louis Acompora, who died suddenly while playing the sport he loved, "12 for Life NYS" is trying to raise money to purchase AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) for special needs homes. As these AEDs will be registered with 911, should a person have a heart attack near one of these homes, 911 will inform the caller that an AED is available. Our staff is trained in their use, as well as in CPR, and will be able to use the AED to help save the person's life until the first responders arrive.

Though any donation would be appreciated, we are asking for $12. 12 was Louis Acompora's jersey number and 100 such donations will allow us to purchase 1 AED.

I am supporting three fundraising teams in this campaign:
FREE - Hospital Rd
FREE - Sipp Ave
FREE Lightning (my agency's Special Olympics team - this AED will be brought to Special Olympics events by one of our coaches, such as myself)

You can donate on my sponsorship page or you can donate directly to one or more of my teams. Please help however you can.

UBCon insanity

So it seems that the organizers of UBCon this year failed to comprehend the concept of "people need time to get and eat food, especially GMs." And set up time. And advertising. And that there are non-locals attending. It's looking like the last disaster all over again.

The schedule is a mess. There are three events that start before the convention does. Three events start at 4pm (the reg desk has never opened before 5pm, and there's always a long line). The whole schedule is out of chronological order (it's in the order that events were entered into the system, the best I can tell). There's only three events on Sunday, period. And the registration form refers to slots (A, B, C, D, E, F) that the schedule doesn't have (Friday, 8PM - 12PM). Since some events are two hours, others four, and some six, with irregular start times and some overnight... well, it just doesn't mesh.

Regardless, I've registered for 34 hours of programming (which I'll probably only attempt 24 - 28 hours of).
